Emptiness is Invitation
“We often don’t know how thirsty we are until we are empty. We can stay empty or we can be filled. We can shrink or we can expand. We can thirst or we can drink so we can pour out.” - Kara Palmer
In the last few weeks, I was emptied in ways I didn’t know possible. The emptiness was a result of dimensions of betrayal, consequence, disappointment and all kinds of emotions and experiences you just can’t put into words. It was the kind of life experience that drops you to your knees. I know you have experienced this. We all have.
As I processed the thoughts and emotions, I kept asking God why he would allow this to happen to me. I sought his face for what he wanted me to learn, how he wanted me to grow and what he was trying to heal. I knew he would work something good from it all, but how? How would he fix it? How would he fix me, broken, humble, empty, on my knees?
Healing and awakening comes in waves that wash over you like tides of cleansing and in layers that deconstruct darkness as the light of revelation pierces through.
We have a choice in our emptiness, in our lack and in our brokenness. I thought about shrinking. You know what if feels like to just hide from the world and pull the covers over your face, lock yourself in your room and ignore the calls from those who love you as you buy the lie that it is just TOO much.
I considered it. I gave those thoughts a good double take. Then, I remembered the life I have in Jesus. My emptiness was an invitation for more: more indwelling, more filling up, more of the great I AM. The emptiness is an invitation to be filled with the water and spirit that gives life. It is like I could hear him say, I allowed you to be emptied Kara because you must pour me back out. We often don’t know how thirsty we are until we are empty. We can stay empty or we can be filled. We can shrink or we can expand. We can thirst or we can drink so we can pour out.
“Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” - John 7:38
Remember, if you are feeling empty, this is an invitation. How will you respond?
