Buying lies

“Be brave enough to deconstruct the lies so they can release the choke-hold they have on you.”

- Kara Palmer

A few years ago, I found myself saying if I could do whatever I wanted, then “this” is what I would do with my life. I eventually muttered these sentiments to a coworker who was bold enough to ask me then why don’t you do “this thing.” My response was my truth and it was also the lie I had been buying. Drumroll, the reason for my not pursuing my dreams was….MONEY! Not only did I apparently think I needed the mega dollars God was blessing me with, I didn’t know how to come out from underneath the burdens this money had afforded me. These are the lies I bought:

1). Money was the bar by which I should measure whether I had succeeded or failed.

2). You must stay tethered to the rat race to keep grasp of the empty treasures that are sucking the life out of you.

3). No one can provide for me, I must take care of myself.

Here is the big problem and the divine solution. “This thing” I would do with me life happened to be what God created me for. God began to take me on the journey of deconstruction, ie personal deconstruction, financial deconstruction, relational deconstruction, marital deconstruction- you name it. He tore it completely down. Once I surrendered and let go of the control, the lies fell to the ground under his feet and the truth surfaced like a clearly lit path. These are the truths He resurrected:

1). Obedience to Christ is the measure of successful living

2). The rat race and materialism are idols standing in the way of authentic communion and worship.

3). Everything I have been given comes from God, not my own pursuits. He giveth and he can taketh. He is my provider. I will enjoy what He entrusts me with not because I have earned it but because he has blessed me.

I would venture to say many of you can relate to living the life the world has told you to live versus that life God has created you to live. If you want to get to the root of what has hold of you so that you can deconstruct the lies you are buying, ask yourself this question, “Why am I not doing what God has put in my heart?” Your answer or answers will be the journey of deconstruction you must go on to determine what has hold of you. Just know that freedom is on the other side. You just need to be brave enough to deconstruct the lies so they can release the choke-hold they have on you.
